Lgorithms 3P (2012)

Artist: L*Roneous

Title: Lgorithms 3P

Source: Artist

Tracklisting:

1. Drift Away
2. Melody
3. Apartment D

Here’s a little something extra for those of you who caught Lgorithms album earlier this year.  It’s obviously quite short but I guarantee you would rather cop three tracks from L*Roneous than a 16 track album from 95% of other ’emcees’.

All three of these tracks are harmonious and have a soulful vibe.   My favorite track of the bunch is Melody.  It just has a very optimistic outlook on life that I want to relate to.  I connected with that joint, though the samples on Apartment D are also quite memorable.

Give it a run…

The 17th – Free Music EP (2012)

Artist: The 17th

Album: The Free Music EP

Source: Artist

Tracklisting:

1. Intro
2. No Name (ft. My Son)
3. Rubbish (ft. Spoke In Wordz x Fokis)
4. Local Artist
5. Vacation
6. The Product
7. Asshole
8. My Drug

Note:

Where to start?  How about this…The 17th brings you the best EP of 2012 thus far…for FREE.  I would not dare to joke when it comes to musical taste and sending this project in your direction.  This EP simply is one of the most complete packages this year.  Rarely do I have an “Oh Shit!” moment when it comes to listening to music these days, but this guy made me say that exact phrase several times throughout this eight track project.

Right after the Intro, about thirty seconds into the track, No Name, I knew that The 17th was onto not only to something fresh, but also exciting.  The production is really astonishing.   The way the kids voices are used to antagonize and respond was nothing short of genius.  That work behind the boards was done by Clockwork, whom I later became aware has passed away (RIP).  The 17th, in his bars, points out all the misconceptions and stereotypes he has been confronted with.

We’ve talked about the tracks, Rubbish and Local Artist previously but they still remain heavy highlights on this short EP.  I especially appreciate Local Artist because of how he portrays the woes, hustle, and lifestyle of being a local hip hop artist.  But he also has a warning (or suggestions) for those who claim to be ‘artists’

Shit look where my town’s at / I haven’t gotta gun, it’s just my hand in a brown bag / Before you speak, learn how to breathe and pronounce raps / Otherwise you ain’t seeing shit like it’s on a brown rag / You couldn’t hold cheese if you was a mouse trap / You can’t  make shit fresh if you was a house cat / Don’t let me catch you out in the town alone with out gas / Or you’ll be screaming for your homies like Al Scratch

The Product showcases The 17th’s storytelling ability on all three verses. The track’s  basis is how we are each made, in part, as a product of our environments.   The second verse in particular is especially dope, yet unnerving.  It gets inside the mind of a terrorist on an airplane getting ready to crash.  The production which is done by the 17th himself is straight out of the movie The Omen.  He’s on some kill Damian type movement with this track.  This is hip hop with an evil intention.

In a genre where it gets harder and harder each day to stand out, The 17th sets himself light years apart from the rest of the field.   Not only do his rhymes create this kind of differentiation, it’s also his ability to produce.  He produced six of the eight tracks on this EP and his ear for  creating beats is on par with some of the best.  But along with beats and lyrics, there is something intangible, that I can’t point my finger on to describe to you.  The word that comes closest to mind is simply…special.

Note:

I am overwhelmed with the amount of music I have slated to review but haven’t been able to get to, but I would regret it immensley if I didn’t touch on the talent that can be found on this Arts and Crafs EP.  I have been sitting on this project for at least four weeks.  It was presented by the good folks at DotGoIt and picked it up just to see what it was about .  What it is, is creative hip hop.

Illogic and Blockhead – Preparing For Capture (2012)

Artist: Illogic and Blockhead

Album: Preparing For Capture

Tracklisting:

1. Matter Of Minutes
2. Poster boy
3. Nails (ft. Rob Sonic)
4. Ego’s Orbit
5. Weigh You Down
6. Caffeine Budge
7. Herstory

Note:

Illogic is a veteran emcee known for expanding on the known bounds of hip hop.  On one hand he is a solid emcee who can spit with the best of them and easily move in and out of different constructs and sub-genres. On the other hand, he is a classic poet. He utilizes poetic structure and devices, such as assonance and alliteration heavily in his rhymes.  He is intellectual and conjures vivid imagery with his wordplay.  He also takes normal, everyday emotions and transcends them into a flurry of words and vice versa. He is truly a one of a kind artist.

Check The Discography: Emilio Rojas

I haven’t done as many ‘check the discography’ segments as I would have liked and was thinking which emcee has put in a lot of work that people would like to get their hands on. I came up with the prolific, Emilio Rojas. The man has undergone a few name changes and a new crowd may not be up on his older material. I am a big fan of this NYC artist and thought some other people might feel the same way and like to check out some of his earlier work.  Unfortunately, the only way to here the album, For Good, is if you want to pay $40.00+ for the import CD at CD Universe. My apologies.

Emilio has another mixtape/street album, Breaking Point, dropping before the end of the year.  He has already released a few singles from that joint.  Also, he and producer M-Phazes have an album that dropped earlier this year under the name Phaze One.  Unfortunately that album is only available in Australia on Itunes.  Here is the link if you happen to be Australian.

UllNevaNo – I’m Thru With Love (2012)

2. that’s what she said
3. pick up lines
4. jean, eternia, boog
5. move on remix (ft. VerBs)
6. she’s got beauty

Note:

I am an anti-Valentine’s day guy.  I know, what a downer.  But I don’t need to use one day in particular to treat my lady right, you heard?  Well, with that being said, B’more artist, UllNevaNo, shot this EP over to me on Valentine’s Day and it just sat in my hard drive for a while.  I’m just not fond of the Valentine’s Day musical motif.  I finally got around to listening to it, and  it wasn’t the typical fluff that you usually get in the inbox on February 14th.   I should have trusted that UllNevaNo wasn’t going to send us some of the same ol’, same ol’.  So because I am a jaded asshole, you all are hearing about this dope release weeks late…sorry.

When I first heard Passalacqua’s first project (Mister, Blaksmith, and Dr. B’s collaborative effort) I was instantly drawn to  something unique.  The two emcees, with their diverse styles, coupled with Dr. B’s easy going and jazzy production combined for  one of the most incredible EPs of 2011.
