I have been sitting on this interview for a minute, waiting for the day to come where I could share it with you guys. I present to you today HHD’s interview with Mr. Live. A lot of new readers may be unfamiliar with Mr. Live, but to those of us who grew up during the advent of the independent hip hop music scene, his name rings bells. Along with groups like Jigmastas and Natural Elements, Mr. Live was releasing a slew of dope 12″ releases that have become revered among heads in my age group. He has one of the most unique voices in the game and I am glad he is back making more music. As 1/2 of Drama Class, along with Earl Blaize, he is releasing his new EP, Conflicted, today. So in conjunction with his return to music, I present words from the man himself…enjoy!
Single You Out: Mr. Morbid & Melph – Vile N Venomous (ft. Little Vic, Eternel, Majesty & Venom)
I’ve been supporting these Mr. Morbid & Melph (out of the Netherlands) the moment I heard their first single. Their album, Close To The End, will be dropping on March 25th. For their latest track they solicit the rhyme stylings of house favorite, Little Vic, along with others. The track is in the same vein as their other efforts that focus on banging drums and dark orchestral samples. I am a fan.
MadKem – The Breeze (feat. K-Hill) (Video)
MadKem puts the visuals to a track from La Vie en Bleu. On the song, The Breeze, he links up with affiliate K-Hill for some added narration. This track is about ambition, persistence, and the pursuit of utilizing one’s abilities to the fullest extent. At least that’s how I see it.
Single You Out: Frank Knight – So High
I first heard Frank Knight on that Fraternity 10 Man Cypher video we debuted a week or so ago. I was impressed with his bars so I thought I would search out some more music from the man. It turns out that he has a new single, So High, that was just released a few days ago. The track is dope and should encourage more folks to be checking for Knight.
Verbal Kent – Sammy Sosa [prod. Khrysis] (Video)
Verbal Kent has been tearing it down lately. I can’t wait to hear the album, Sound Of The Weapon, which is entirely produced by Khrysis. The album is dropping on February 18th (that feels too fay away).
Single You Out: Eff Yoo – The Tri-Lateral Commission (ft. Spit Gemz and Starvin B)
Eff Yoo is releasing some dope from his vaults and his first salvo comes in the form of The Tri-Lateral Commission which features the usual suspects of Spit Gemz and Starvin B. Led by a guitar riff, the three emcees spit nothing but bars and leave a hook unnecessary. I hope Eff Yoo has some more gems locked away. It’s too good to leave unheard.
Illa Ghee – Salute The General (ft. Fame) (Video)
Illa Ghee make us fiend for the album with his release of the single, Salute The General. This track by DJ Skizz is saturated in the realness which suits Illa Ghee just fine because that’s his M.O. He has a real nice flow, where at the end he promises to bust all shots on the “skinny jean” culture. I am all for that. His album Social Graffiti is dropping in the second quarter of this year. Fakes and frauds beware!
Single You Out: Prince Po & Oh No – Toxic
Prince Po and Oh No will be releasing their collaborative project, Animal Serum, on February 4th. This is the type of sound you can expect to hear from the project. The production and the flow are very sophisticated. But the most important part…it sounds really nice to me. I have always been a fan of Prince Po’s material and looking forward to getting this album.
The AbSoulJah – Ninety Something (ft. DJ Safe) (Produced by Gabz of Le Gouffre) (Video)
This is some newness given the video treatment from The AbSoulJah’s latest album, Dim The Light. The track is smooth with some expert chopping by DJ Safe. The AbSoulJah continues to maintain a high level of musical excellence not only with this song, but also the entire album. I hope to have a review done sooner rather than later. If you like that NY/Boom Bap flavor, I would cop this.
