Top 5 EPs (2012)

This was a tough category.  There were so many dope, short projects that were offered up this year that it was really hard to narrow it down to my favorites.  I just kept the one ruling principle in mind as to who made the dopes music.  With that being kept in mind there were some dope artists left off…most notably The Brown Bag AllStars.  That crew put out a ton of dope EPs this year and surely some of them would have made a Top 10, just not the Top 5.  I simply couldn’t let got of these joints.

#1 -The 17th – Free Music EP

The 17th gave us ‘FREE Music’ but not only that, he gave us some remarkable music.  This EP is close to flawless as they come.  You get eight tracks jam packed with flavor, great concept, flows, production, and delivery.  Another remarkable aspect is that much of the EP is his from beginning to end.  He of course is the lead emcee, but also the producer for the bulk of the tracks as well.

Service Without A Smile - Front
#2 – Serge Severe x Terminill – Service Without A Smile

Serge Severe and Terminilllinked up for  a superlative effort on Service Without A Smile.  The two really played off of each other’s strengths and this proved to be one of the illest producer/emcee combos of 2012.

front
#3 – Nefew x Shakes x Nottz – For Hip Hop

Speaking of ill producer/emcee combos, how about this one?  Swiss-American hip-hop group, Nefew, Virginia emcee Shakes, and super producer Nottz link up for for this five track EP.   You can’t go wrong with this joint!

mayday
#4 – Mayday – Thrift Store Halos

MayDay has a sound all unto themselves.  They have have great production to back them up on Thrift Store Halos and their melodies, rhymes, and guest shots throughout make this one a clear winner for 2012.

#5 – The Narcicyst – Leap Of Faith

The Narcicyst comes back in 2012 with a lyrical fury from Dubai.  Ok, a lyrical fury may be a bit extreme but his world observations set to rhythm set him apart from the pack this year.

Friday Feature: Peet Caliber – 38Special Cypha (ft. Big Lou x Bori Puro x PH)

It’s the last Friday of the month (and year for that matter) and therefor it’s also the last Friday Feature for Peet Caliber .  But we are going to end this one with a bang!  Caliber brings in some heavy hitters in the form of Big Lou, Bori Puro, and PH (Pumpkinhead).  It’s a banger done in true East Coast fashion!  Make sure you check out all of Peet Caliber’s work.  The man has a vast amount of talent and with the right breaks his name will start ringing bells in every household.   This particular song can be found on his most recent album…SteakNEggz3

Single You Out: Silent Knight – Ballot Of The Wallet (prod. by Madwreck)

artworks-000036436588-o9f4le-t300x300

The man who dropped the Single Of The Year in 2011 is back at it in the latter part of this year, prepping his next project, Busy Is My Best Friend II.  This song is the anti-thesis of C.R.E.A.M. in the observations of Silent Knight.   Can he get us to drop that ‘cash first’ mentality?  Well, I can tell you the song is fresh, contains dope lyricism, and a well intentioned message.  Check it…

Single You Out: Swerve & SYG – I Have Love (prod. Heikki Hoo)

Swerve is that man right now in my opinion.  The songs that Swerve and SYG are offering up right now are incredible.    If you are a fan of hip hop you are going to love this music.  These are relate able rhymes combined with an almost bluesy feel in the production.  But here’s the caveat, they need our help in order to finish their vision for what the forthcoming album Cold Winter & War Whiskeys 2 should be.  They want to put out a premium product and need some investment from their listeners (family) so they can see this project through.  So they are charging $1.29 for the song.    Of course this is an investment, so please feel free to contribute more.  For $20.00 they will send you a signed physical copy of the album when it is released.  What I would like to see from my readership is at least a $5.00 donation to the cause to help promote good music.  Because without our assistance in some capacity…this good music is going away…
